NWMO dialogue

We want to hear from you!

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is inviting Indigenous Peoples and Canadians to share their feedback on our proposed approach to siting a deep geological repository to manage radioactive waste for the long term. We invite you to review our discussion document on our proposed site selection approach and to answer a few questions in these pages. The site selection process will invite communities to express their interest in potentially hosting a deep geological repository.

We invite you to provide your feedback. Your input will help us confirm and refine our site selection process for Canada's second repository before we launch the process, around 2028.

Our proposed site selection process is set out in a discussion document that we published in June 2025. Our approach prioritizes Indigenous engagement.

Once you have logged in, your information and that of other respondents will be collected and summarized as part of our site selection process engagement reports. Your name and contact information will remain private. Individual responses will not be shared publicly, and your personal data will be protected.

Why is this important?

The NWMO’s mandate is to manage radioactive waste in a manner that protects people and the environment. We are planning to manage intermediate- and high-level radioactive waste in deep geological repositories, in keeping with best practices established by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Your input will help us confirm a site selection approach for Canada's second deep geological repository. This repository will be designed to contain and isolate intermediate-level and non-fuel high-level waste, and potentially used fuel from new nuclear reactors built in the future.

How will my input be used?

Your input will help refine our proposed site selection approach. The approach is based on the strengths of and learnings from our site selection approach for Canada's first deep geological repository project to manage used nuclear fuel, which is currently in the regulatory decision-making process. It also incorporates the feedback of Indigenous Peoples and Canadians who took part in public engagement as part of the development of Canada’s Integrated Strategy for Radioactive Waste.

Our site selection approach for the second repository is consent-based, as was the approach for the first repository. It builds on more than 20 years of experience, aligns with international practices and incorporates advancements in Reconciliation, science and technology. We invite you to review and comment on the proposed site selection process. Your activities on this platform will remain confidential and your email will not be shared. Your input will be considered along with the input of other Canadians and Indigenous Peoples and will be summarized in the NWMO’s feedback reports.

The NWMO is inviting feedback from Indigenous Peoples and Canadians on the proposed site selection process for Canada’s second deep geological repository. Following public input, we plan to launch the process around 2028. Join the discussion!
If you’d like to explore hosting an online or in-person group workshop on the second repository project, facilitated by a member of our staff, please tell us the name of your organization and indicate that you want to host a workshop. We will follow up with next steps.
